What is WOT and Other Web Browser Plugins

Have you ever used a WOT? Don’t know what it is?

WOT (Web of Trust) is a Safe Web Search and Secure Browsing add-on for browsers that became popular around 2006. Since then browsers have evolved to the point where a WOT browser extensions are not only no longer necessary and have, themselves, become untrustworthy.  On November 4th, 2016 PC Magazine published an article revealing that WOT is selling very detailed information about you to third parties.

PC World went on to explain: “Mozilla decided to pull the Web of Trust add-on from its catalog, and the company behind the extension quickly pulled its software off of other browser platforms as well”.

Are your Web Browser Plugins Safe?

Mozilla, the organization behind the Firefox web browser, introduced a “plugin checker” page in 2009  that analyzed whether the plugins you had installed in your web browser were up to date. Now that tool has been updated to check plugins installed in other web browsers too, including Safari, Chrome, Opera and Internet Explorer.
According to the Director of Firefox Development, Johnathan Nightingale, plugin safety is an issue across the web. “Outdated plugins are a major source of security and stability risk for web users,” he wrote in a company blog post.
